Everyone is Encouraged to Be the Extra Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
