The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
